As some of you may know, I recently transferred to Millersville University in Pennsylvania. The first couple of weeks sleep came quick. Now, however, I am used to living here. Therefore, my old problem of not being able to sleep has come back. I really do not know what to do for this. That is, I do not know what a professional would say to me if I went to a appointment.
I think I know why I am afraid to sleep. The main reason anyway. I am afraid of having nightmares. I do not know if there is a name for this, but that is what I experience now for the past three days. Then, when I finally get to sleep around three in the morning I still end up having a nightmare. So my sleep, to put it mildly, has been horrible these past couple days.
It is important to note that what I do might not work for you. This is just advice and experiences I have had that have worked for me.
Before going to sleep, do something that is not very hard on you mentally. Do not watch TV or play games for about a hour before you go to sleep. I am guilty of watching Star Wars every night though so I do not know the validity of the prior statement. This technique has worked to clear my mind though. Clearing your mind is the main thing to do before sleeping. In my experience, if I am worrying about something when I try to go to sleep I will not be able to sleep well at all.
I have been told that the content of the media I am either watching reading or playing has a profound effect on my sleep as well. I do not necessarily agree with this. I agree that there are definitely things you should not watch right before sleeping, but I have experienced that watching or playing ‘mindless’ games or TV does help. You don’t have to think about it. You can just passively watch it.
There is one thing that I must bring up though, I will expand on this in another post, but I am an advocate for active reading, watching, playing. If you are passive all the time your creativity will be affected negatively and you will suffer mentally in the long run in my opinion.
Back to sleep then, I think that sleep could be the single most important thing for people to have to stay mentally and emotionally healthy. There is some preventative measures you can take to try to sleep better, but I am still working on this problem myself. I will add another post once I figure it out!
